Well, pretty close most of the time. Lots closer than any other method I know of.

Agreed, gun drilling works very well, plenty straight for our purposes most of the time. Still, the bits do wander though, try measuring sometime, just for kicks. Heck, few of us have lathe beds that are unworn, and perfectly leveled and aligned, so even without any wandering of the bit, there’s still going to be some degree of runout.

Anyway, I just wanted to clarify, because gundrills can wander significantly under some circumstances, particulary if fed under power at too great a feed rate, or if you have anything signifcant in your set-up that causes lateral forces on the gundrill relative to the wood being bored.
