Hey, this is a good spot to mention that I just heard a version of the jig Strayaway Child, played by the Chieftains…mostly the flute taking the melody. VERY nice! Played on a Eb flute with the mike very close, and played VERY slowly. Irish music often sounds great when played fast, but this expample proves to me that a good player can transform a piece into something entirely new and different, and changing the speed is part of that. I don’t care what those pseudo-intellectuals say, the Chieftains are darned good!
Check out the Chieftains album “The Long Black Veil”
Has several major music artists, but another good example of slowing down a tune.. listen to their version of Dunmore Lassies. Very haunting and cool!!!
I try to emulate it on a Low D. I can do it pretty well, but I am assuming it is at least a C flute or possibly lower, since there is at least one note I can’t hit below D.
Take care,
John
I learned Dunmore Lasses from “The Long Black Veil”. Also several other tunes. It’s one of their best cds.IMHO
Agreed - that’s a great cd; as is their #2. I have a nice version of Dunmoor Lassies written out for whistle by Bill Ochs; glad I was able to learn a favorite.
