MOVIE: "The Wind That Shakes the Barley"

Randomly, I ran across an entry for a movie in post-production called “The Wind That Shakes the Barley.” There’s not much information on it. They have it listed as a war movie. Directed by Ken Loach.

Ken Loach has been making films and documentaries for nearly forty years now. All of his work, though humourous , as a very strong message running through it. I’ve always perceived him as Cinemas version of Woody Guthrie, such is the strength of his political beliefs.
He may not be one of the most financially successful film makers out there but he is one of the finest.

Well worth checking out and I, for one, look forward to this new release.

I, too, can’t wait to see what is presented for our viewing pleasure.

Kes is one of my favourite films.

Looks very interesting indeed, I like Cilian Murphy a lot as well.

Loach just won that French Oscar thingy, Golden Fern or something, for this film. Apparently it is about the Scottish Black & Tans in Ireland, and their ferocious savagery against the citizenry there. Two things were noted by those reviewing this medal win: that there is far more action and violence in this film than any of Loach’s other films, and that there is so much suggested allegory of the Irish pre-civil war to what’s going on now in certain Muslim countries that some say it is the method used for voicing political opinion by the film critics at this particular French festival to select a current and controversial film like Loach’s.

Everyone talking about Loach’s win echoed dubhlinn’s sentiments that Loach has been around for many years, has been an insiration to many of the filmmakers who normally win this prize, and that he ought to win something sooner or later.

Another one of Ken Loachs’ films was “Black Jack” (1979) which I have been looking out for for a few years now. There have been a few films made with this title. Apparently ken’s was on VHS in the 80’s so there must be a copy somewhere. If anyone has one I would love the chance to see it. Packie Byrne is in it who plays Dr Carmody and even plays the whistle in it, I believe a Camac in B. It was never to my knowledge released on DVD but if someone has seen it and knows where to buy a copy…? I would be grateful.

I think ye must be interpreting the photograph wrang! They are wearing Balmoral Bonnetts which was a standard issue of the mishmash of uniforms the Tans wore.Hence the name black and tans.(mixture of RIC and British Army Uniforms.)The tans were recruited from the returned unemployed soldiery of the 1st World War and included thugs frae all the regions of Britain,in their ranks, not just Scotland.
Uilliam.

Sometimes, the more subtle details are lost on our 'merkin friends.

No fault of theirs, I hasten to add.
Slan,

I put it as “Scottish” because that is how the story was reported on BBC News.

I would say that the mericanaigh are perfectly capable of extrapolating the truth if they took the time to look for it,instead of stating as fact the 1st thing that comes to mind!! …anyways David is frae Canada

PS I should have said the RIC(Royal Irish Constabulary) and not of course the RUC(Royal Ulster Constabulary) which hadn’t been formed until the gerrymandered Northern Irish Statelet was formed after the war of Independence.

Well now ye know something we always knew…never trust the media ESPECIALLY the bloody British Broadcasting Corporation that bastion of imperious propaganda … :swear:
