OK, here are some more of my perceptions on newly acquired whistles. I got a raise at work, so what better way to celebrate than some new whistles?
The big news is that the Burke Pro Session D finally arrived. What can I say but this: Mike Burke, you rule. The whistle is not only a thing of beauty, but it’s heavenly to play and listen to. This will likely be my only higher-end whistle, unless I decide to get one in another key :-7 He is a true craftsman and gifted from above.
Also, in my quest for the Holy Grail of the cheap whistle (about which I’ve yammered repeatedly on this board) that’s actually in tune, I’ve had some good luck finally!
I got an O’Briain Improved Feadog. It’s extremely nice, and will likely become my favorite cheap whistle. (It’s not dirt-cheap, but it’s worth the $). And amazingly, I got a couple of decent Generations, a nice Walton’s LBW, and a pretty decent out-of-the-box Feadog.
It isn’t just that my playing is better now than when I got the other ones. These whistles just plain sound better as I’ve compared them to the older ones I have. Maybe it’s true that QC has gotten better. Or maybe the whistle gods finally smiled upon me, who knows? I’d stated before that all I want in a cheap whistle (since I like the cheapo sound) was one that’s in tune, not too much to ask, I think. At least I know they’re out there now.
I now only await the tweaked Shaw Low A from Jerry Freeman, which should arrive in the next day or two. I also am getting a couple of tweaked Sweetones from him since I was mostly curious about what a tweaked Sweetone would sound like and am a Clarke/Sweetone/Meg fan.
Anyhow, just wanted to share these observations FWIW. I’m glad to have some instruments I really love.
