Mopane Wood

What kind of wood is mopane? How does it sound when used to make a flute? What does it look like?

Why do you ask, Nopaul?

I’ve got two mopane pipe chanters, but nary a flute or whistle. It’s been used as an alternative to African blackwood for several years.

I have a Casey Burns flute in mopane that I really like. I know of one other board member with a mopane flute who also really loves it. I don’t know how much the wood influences the tone, but this flute is very mellow and warm.

Yes, it looks lovely; it’s mellow and warm.
I like it’s sound less well than blackwood.

My friend has a set of mopane border pipes by Nigel Richard. It is very nice. The tone of the drones is especially mellow.
