just curious, has anybody tried this? I was thinking I might be able to flatten it enough by moving back the bridle and adding wax to the tongue?

I tried it a few years back. The result was an unstable drone which varied in pitch with the pressure. You might have better luck if you make a special bass drone reed for playing in C rather than trying to adjust your D reed.
