Meths to clean blackwood?

Just to be clear, I oil my Olwell inside and out regularly, cover the pads with clingfilm when so doing, and I will clean the keys with Silvo whenever they start to tarnish, which they haven’t yet.

Is it advisable to use meths to clean around the embouchure? Basically, my head joint is getting a bit manky 'roon the hole (but it’s not a Mancke headjoint, arf).

I have already tried emailing Pat & Aaron for an answer, but haven’t had a reply. That’s cool - they’re busy men…

Bryan Byrne recommended using isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol on a Q-tip to clean the walls of the embouchure.

Best wishes.

Better than Meth.

Yes, you would not want to get meth-mouth.
About 5% of alcohol consumed is excreted through the lungs so just bring a Q-tip to the session.

Meths, isoprop, surgical spirit - all fine. But if it’s just the normal build-up on the walls of the embouchure hole, I think you’ll generally find a bit of spit (or water, but not beer!) on a corner of your normal swab cloth or a cotton hankie, wrapping it over the end your cleaning rod or a pencil/bit of dowel and twirling/rubbing that around the walls with the side of the end will do just fine. A wet-wipe would also do a good job. An earwig (Q-tip) and alcohol is rather overkill unless you’ve been blowing glue (or linseed oil!!!) into your embouchure!
