I’ve got an M & E R & R flute (too many &&&&s…). Unfortunately I haven’t really got to grips with it - I have a weakened left thumb (old rugby injury) and just can’t get a comfortable grip for more than a few minutes at a time
Coupled to this, some of you may recall that I lost my Burke Low Viper and some other instruments Christmas time which has proved to be frustrating 'cos I can at least hold the old Low Whistle comfortably. So… Regretfully, I’d like to either sell or swap the flute. It’s had hardly any use, has steel joint rings and a soft case, and was bought exactly a year ago. I see that nowadays that combination is going for $450 / £260 (according to today’s exchange rate) Here’s the M&E homepage:
So, anyone want to make me an offer? I’d take either cash and/or whistles - a nice Low Whistle and maybe some other stuff would be, well, erm, nice… Sounds a bit vague but I’d like to see it go to an appreciative owner, hence trying C&F initially, rather than ebay, and perhaps a flexible arrangement could be good for someone else with ‘assets’ but no spare cash, like me
With a bit of luck I’ll get some physio on this thumb and maybe a lighter flute, and give it a go some other time. Ah well.
By all means a lighter flute, but as I understand you,
your left thumb shouldn’t be an issue, unless
you are using piper’s grip–most people don’t use this,
in fact.
Given classical grip, the flute rests on the base of
the left index. Your left thumb does almost nothing;
it just makes contact with the barrel wherever you
want, but it doesn’t apply pressure. You could,
in principle, just let it hang loose.
So you may not need to give up this instrument.
What grip are you using?
