Low D Northumberland maker?

Hi,

On a recent trip to Durham UK, and in the spur of the moment I bought my first low D whistle at the market there. Having only played high whistles I have always wanted to try my hand at the lows. The guy who sold me the whistle didn’t have the name of the maker but said that he was from Northumberland, I thought it sounded nice and it had a fairly easy reach. It’s a non-tunable alloy whistle with a curved wind-way and with a window design the same as as an MK. The fipple is alloy and everything is nicely finished with a ‘D’ stamped at the foot of the whistle but no makers mark.

I haven’t got a picture of it but was wondering if anyone had heard of any makers from Northumberland who could have made this whistle?

I think the fellow who makes Shearwater whistles is up that sort of way?

Hi Sharp,

It isn’t a shearwater, I had a look at the website. My whistle is one straight piece of alloy piping with a window design like an MK. The Shearwater has a raised capped roof over the wind-way. But thanks for the tip

Hi Chris,
Does it look very similar to a Chieftain V3.
There was a chap from up that way making them called ‘Williams’
I’ve played one of his F whistles, nice whistle.
He stopped making them for a while because of manufacturing costs.

Hi Narrowdog,

Thanks

Yes it looks identical to the Chieftain V3 with the same window, I picked it up for 75 pounds. Has this ‘Williams’ maker had any reviews?

No reviews as far as I know.
He made only a dozen or so in G F and D.
I think his brother (he helped make them) used to be on here and has a youtube channel.

I’ve been in touch with the shop where they’re sold in Durham, Market Music http://www.marketmusic-durham.co.uk/ but the owner, John, tells me he just sold the last low D and is waiting to restock when the maker visits him.
