I’ve recieved my first low D today. I’ve been playing flute for a year or so and thought a low D would be nice to learn tunes on before moving them over to the flute. The reach to the D seems to be a bit aggravating on my fingers, is this something that is going to ease up over time (I’ve never felt uncomfortable playing the flute)? Also the tone seems to be a bit airy - there isn’t much edge to it. Is there a special technique in blowing a low whistle? Any advice would be appreciated.
Different whistles have different characteristics as you might have guessed. That concerns both tone and ergonomics.
Who made your low whistle?
It’s an MK whistle, it’s the one Misha used on a couple of his albums with Croft no Five - he was kind enough to sell it to me (I couldn’t afford a new one).
I’ve never played an MK (
), but generally whistles will sound breathier or airier to the player than to the audience. Record yourself and listen back.
The reach on a low D is different from the flute, and you’ll need to work on it for a while — at least I did.
Support your breath from your diaphram, and push the air through the whistle.
