I have a wonderful Silkstone Alloy Low D that I bought from Paul back in 2003, and have been using it for gigs ever since. During the past three years or so, my “little whistles” have grown pretty cold and dormant, as I have morphed into a “full-time” Low Whistle person.
Thus, it is time to venture into the lower realm (a la baritone whistles, etc…).
Who makes the best (IYO) Low C, Low Bb, and (this may be a REAL stretch…) Low A (as in BELOW Low D) out there??? Does a “super Low G” below Low D even exist, and if so, who in the world makes them???
No plastics or composites, please. I’m old school - I want alloy/brass/metal, etc.
Any makers reading this feel like taking on a project?
Also, I did call Hobgoblin recently, and they hope to have one (!) Low C in late Jan. of 2007, which I already have a hold on (put that Visa back in your wallet…), but other than that, I’m having no luck.
I have below low D a Chieftain low C, Overton bass Bb, and a Overton bass A. Overton also makes a bass G. The maker of Overton whistles, Colin Goldie with work with a buyer to make a whistle that meets their needs.
I really enjoy my Alba low C, and I bet that the low Bb is quite the same. It has a absolutely lovely tone, and it even takes less breath than my Kerry Songbird low D, without being noticeable quieter. The streach is, for me, of course, no problem. But I know it may be a problem for some.
I have an Overton Low C and Overton low A, used to have an Overton low Bb. I recommend them highly. After playing the low A for a bit the low D seems small. The challenge is not the fingerstrech so much as the arm reach on the low A…
