Hello all,
After I heard the discription of it sound qualities, I was looking for a Feadog MK.I and last year I found one. I absolutely love it and perfectly fits my needs in terms of sound (sweet, clean, velvety), clarity, and playability.
Now I am looking for a Bb whistle with more or less the same qualities. Does someone know if, and if so, which, whistle might fit the same desciption?
Yes we’re in total agreement about our “ideal” whistle. My favourite D is the Feadog Mk1 that I’ve been playing since I bought it new around 1980.
Incredibly free-blowing, sweet, and clear. Super easy nimble sweet 2nd octave, yet the low notes down to Bottom D are full and round. However it’s a quiet whistle.
I’ve played Bb whistles that played very similarly, these were always vintage Generations, that had that combination of amazingly sweet easy clear high notes and round full low notes. I’ve never myself found one like that, and I’ve spent nearly 40 years trying every Generation Bb I can get my hands on. The best ones have been owned by good players, and they’re not for sale!
I do have a Jerry Freeman Tweaked Generation Bb that’s fairly close to that ideal. Most of the Freeman Generations I’ve had appear to be going for a different thing, a louder edgier dirtier tone, but I have one Freeman Generation Bb head which plays more like the sweet clean vintage Generations do. (I’m using that head on a home-made Mezzo A body, the result being an extremely nice A whistle, better than the Sindt A which I owned.)
