Someone’s asked me what I’d like for Christmas, and one thing I’d really like is a good portable recording device (the one I currently have is more for recording dictation, and doesn’t work well for music…particularly for the harp, as it picks up all kinds of string noise). I’m not sure how to describe what I’m looking for to these people, however, so that I don’t end up getting either a plain-vanilla tape recorder (such as you might pick up at any Longs or Rite Aid) or an mp3 player. I know that some of you have portable recording devices that you’re happy with…can you give me some leads?
I don’t want something that’s designed to work with an iPod…I don’t have an iPod, and don’t really want one. I do want something that will allow me to get a good recording of my music and to save it in a format that will allow me to upload it to the web.
Userid eskin has posted I don’t know how many threads about all the various portable recording devices he has tried on the various forums here. Why not PM him for some good advice?
I use a Roland Edirol. They are geared more towards musicians, but a bit pricey in some peoples’ opinion.
I recommend a Sony PCM-D50. Rugged built. Easy to use. Many custom switches. Big screen. Plus slow-downer built in, switched on with its own switch. 4 Gb memory and extendable. Very high quality sound recording. See review here: http://digitalmedia.oreilly.com/2008/01/10/sony-pcm-d50-recorder-review.html
