Just got my chanter fitted with C and F nat keys. Never had an Fnat key before and I find that I’m needing to keep my left hand pinkie finger tucked out of the way so I don’t clip the f key. I’m having to adjust how I use my top hand… Tucking my pinkie under. what do other folk do to avoid clipping the f Nat key or other keys for that matter.
I keep my left pinkie sticking out and away from the chanter. If tucked under, you can’t easily use the keys the little finger is used for.
Letting it fly where it will is preferable to
tucking it in or sticking it out of the way as
either will inhibit the movement of the 3rd
finger. If the key is properly sprung it shouldn’t
open.
It sounds like your F nat key is sticking out too much… but then Hands differ… fingering positions differ… length of fingers differ…
The OLD makers did not use a long F key ,… perhaps for this very reason ?
And a ring key for Fnat is so much nicer to use. It almost feels like another tone hole. One can slide the bottom-hand ring finger up from E and engage the ring key. So simple. So elegant.
Bien sûr !! ![]()
C’est vrai! ![]()
I have two chanters with F-natural keys (and two without). One is a ring key, the other has a pinkie key, but the pinkie key is on the side of the chanter and it is impossible to open it by accident for me. So is the ring key for that matter. I can lay my fingers the same way across all of my chanters. Is your pinkie key on the front of the chanter? I’m having a hard time visualising how your pinkie finger could be in the way. Possibly you could post a photo of your chanter?
Hi, the f key doesn’t open and it’s not a problem in terms of unwanted fs. It’s just my pinkie sometimes clips the key in passing. Guess I’m used to there not being a key there and now there is. I’m getting more used to there being a key there but takes a little getting used to. I’ve decided just to play as usual and if my pinkie clips the key then so be it.
