learning without a teacher

This is for beginners who have no access to teachers or other whistle players:
Anyone out there interested in a free introductory lesson on Irish tin whistle?
Offer good for the next 4 weeks)
You would send me a tape of yourself playing (so I can hear what you are doing - just a few tunes-not a concert!) I will return the tape with suggestions and recording of me giving examples. I would include basic technique, breathing, phrasing, tonguing and ornmentation - based on your level (as shown on your tape) (Just include $1 to cover my mailing costs back to you)
Why am I doing this?

  1. I love Irish Trad Music and want to help others who want to learn to play it.
  2. I am a music teacher - this is what I do
  3. I hate to see posts on this board from people who are frustrated in their efforts to learn because there are no other whistlers or teachers accessible to them.
  4. I have some free time over the next month
  5. The Crystal People told me to do this…
Seriously though, either add to this post or send a “private message” and I will get back to you.

Bravo, Whistlepeg-- you’re a good man!

Bravo indeed!

If one were interested in taking you up on your incredibly generous offer, how would one do this? I dont see an email address on your profile.

I for one would be pleased to benefit from your experience. My email is dazedinla@aol.com. Please let me know the address to send a tape!!

I said it once and I’ll say it again…the people on this Board are Fantastic. I’m looking forward to the day when I’ve learned enough to be able to contribute and put in to this group as much as I’m getting out of it.

Kevin

P.S. In all fairness let me add that I may have access to people…I just went to my first session ever last night (which was fantastic…Annie Moores is a great, easy-going fun session), and Im just starting to meet people, so I dont know if any are instructors or not (I think one of them might be but I have no idea about his availablility, etc), and Im not likely to find out much in the next month. So if you get swamped with true beginners in Antarctica and Siberia then of course I defer to these poor souls. If for some reason you dont get much response, then by all means I’d love to benefit from your experience.

i am definately interested.. i looked for a teacher for almost a year until i found a recorder instructor who i had to convince to teach me the basics of music, posture, breathing, etc. she is great, but her first love is the recorder, not the whistle.

If I may suggest, it would be easier to post a tune to Clips by emailing it to me. It could be posted anonymously and the teacher/student could email each other with the details if you want it kept private. Otherwise, with permission, the critique could be public for everyone’s benefit. I could even put up a “learners” page. I would be, of course, sworn to silence. We could use code names. It would be cool. Just let me know (by email).
Tony

That’s a thoughtful idea Tony, but in my experience, it is hard enough for a beginner to tape themselves for private evaluation by a teacher. To think that their playing may be posted for all to hear - even if it is anonymous - is daunting enough that it would deter them. Kind of like going to the doctor and finding a group of medical students observing your examination!
Personally, I prefer the intimate approach of a direct link to the student via tape - next best thing to being there as they say.
But thanks for the suggestion
Sue

Whistlepeg, I suggested to Tony that
a beginners’ section would be a good
idea because the only people who
would listen would know it’s “just a
beginner” and not expect the tunes
to be good, or even listenable

Have you checked your private
messages? I would be delighted to
take you up on your kind offer,
beginners’ Clips & Snips or not.
