Kerry Low D whistles

Greetings to one and all: have recently bought on E-bay a kerry low D whistle and I’m finding a slight buzz on the lower octave A and G notes: holes are completely closed by fingers, any ideas as to cause, anyone? TIA any info here, Richard

Welcome to the fourm.

It could be air noise. On various of my whistles, for different fingerings there is a certain change in the volume of the air as it escapes from the holes. Cross fingerings (such as Cnat) are notorious for this effect.

I had a similar problem with the plastic top Kerry I owned. A buzz I couldn’t eliminate. Never did eliminate it. I recall at least a couple of others complaining about it.

I preferred the Howard to the Kerry in this format of Low whistle for that reason.

I’ve got the plastic top kerry too. I don’t have the buzz problem, but I do no you can play around with it and it may help. You can do the blue tac trick. There isn’t a huge space under there or anything, but you might alter the physics of the whistle to lessen the buzz. You can also stick a bit of plastic onto the blade to extend it further, using sticky tac to secure it. I have a bit of platic and tac on mine right now. Easy to do, given the size. It cuts down on the air a bit, makes the sound a little sweeter and quieter, but still keeps its character.

I had that same buzz. I finally took the fipple off to clean it. Looking into the wide end (where the tube goes in) I noticed a hairline leak in the end of the fipple between the outer sleeve and the inner fipple part. You could see light coming in from that angle, but if it was on the tube and you looked at it, you’d never see it. Some kind of quality control issue I imagine.

Anyway, I contacted Phil about it and he sent me a new fipple. Works fine now.

Best,

Little John

Mine appears to have no problem at all, except for being LOUD and taking quite a bit of breath. Also, the C natural sounds most in tune with only two fingers down (and you can get away with just one), and the C# sounds most in tune with all of the right-hand fingers down. I think this probably goes along with the high breath requirement.

The real challenge is when I lay down my Kerry and pick up my Oak. squeek :boggle:

Where can I find a Kerry whistle? I would like one mainly because…well…it’s my name. I have the Clare whistle and the interesting part to that is it’s the name of my family that came from Ireland.

Thanks!

I found on one simply irish…

Silverstrand,
Since the one you found at Simply Irish comes from Ireland, and they charge more for it, and shipping, you can save yourself about $50 or more if you get it at thewhistleshop.com-here’s the link:

From your Avatar, you look more like a Corr than a Kerry! And by the way, if this is your first low D whistle, get ready to stretch your fingers! See the notes on Chiff and Fipple about low whistles and fingering, and also the whistle shop’s guidelines about buying a low whistle. Some people have trouble because their hands are on the small side for the larger whistles. Not all are unplayable for small hands, some are better than others.
You can visit Phil Hardys website to see and hear these whistles:
www.kerrywhistles.com
psst-and get his free cd of whistle music for the asking-it’s called whistleworks.
Take care,

SilverS’,
PS Do you play the cello? I don’t play it yet, but it’s on my to do list! I love it! There’s a great cello cd by Barry Phillips called “Cello” that you might like to check out-it’s a collection of Celtic music on the cello, and the last tune, Inis Oirr is why I started playing whistle. Enjoy!

That avatar is actually Andrea Corr…but once someone thought she was my sister so I took it as a compliment!

I don’t play the cello either…you might’ve guessed from my signature! Actually that is a line from the Corr’s single “Summer Sunshine”… It’s a nice song though it doesn’t have a tinge of Irish-ness in it.

It’s still a Corr’s song though!

Actually the next instrument on my ‘to do’ list is the bodhran!
