As they offer O’Briain and Froment bag shape, I wanted to ask which feels better for D practice set. I see the O’Briain shape (which I like the look) is quite wider than Froment shape. Anyone found it to big and prefered the Froment for easier control?
Wish you a happy Easter, Cheers
I am afraid his is probably another one of those questions that doesn’t have a clear-cut answer. How long is a piece of string after all?
There are things to be taken into consideration: the physique of the player, the posture and there’s the type and length of the reedcap and the type of connection. They all play a part when deciding what is a comfortable bag. You may want to take into consideration whether or not you’re going to use the bag when going to 1/2-3/4 or full set as well. Without knowing any of those you can at best expect people to state their own preference. And that would probably not be of any real help as each type of bag they offer obviously works to begin with.
consider making your own vinyl bag. It’s easy and allows you to make a comfortable shape and educate yourself about these things. I am finding length of neck to have a effect on how things fit, as much as actual bag dimensions. Easy instuctions online, use 3M 5200 adhesive, slow cure, though it takes a week to fully set up.
Which ever shape you decide on, Kelleher bags are great and Niall (Kelleher) is absolutely top shelf in the way he handles business (e.g. prompt confirmation, shipping, etc.).
Those who dare to consider L&M bags, have a look at a new bag of theirs.

The patch is theirs. Apparently, they cut a hole int he bag, silicone the seam, THEN patch the hole. Insane.
Kelleher! Period!
Yeah I’ve got to say whatever the shape Kelleher bags (and bellows) are amazing! Their leather is amazing and stopped the bad habits I’d picked up with my first (very leaky) bag and bellows.
They were also amazingly helpful, professional and extremely friendly!
I would immediately recommend them to anyone (and everyone)!
Well-said, Mr. Gumby. Maybe we should make a sticky out of that one paragraph and put it everywhere!
So this is COMPLETELY personal opinion, but having played both a fair bit, I think I prefer the O’Briain shape for purely lazy reasons. When I’m tired the O’Briain shape lets me lean back in my chair because it doesn’t stick out behind me!
Peter is right there.
One thing i will add is that the O’Briain bag works better with a full set that has a wrap around bass regulator extension.
The other designs have a bit more room for the bass regulator to fit under the neck of the bag. But that doesn’t matter with a practice set.
