Josephine Keegan supplied the Piano accompaniment on most of the late Sean McGuires greatest recordings.I am sure she will have a tale or two to tell about the great man on the night.
I just wish I could be there to hear it.
Slan,
D.
It was a great night of music. Josephine Keegan was a pure joy to listen to: clean, brilliant piano and delightful and robust fiddling, despite her soft-spoken manner. Her personality and long intimacy with the music glowed through her playing and it was moving to see and hear her. There were also a number of other musicians who joined her on stage: John Daly, who put the evening together; Catherine Gavin (do I have that right?), wonderful on the piano accompanying Keegan and others; Cleek Shrey on piano and fiddle; Dennis Cahill playing mandolin; Marty Fahey on piano and box; and Sean O’Hare (Kieran’s brother) doing some very lovely whistling. One thing especially noticeable to me was the variety of piano accompaniment styles–Keegan, Gavin, Fahey, and Shrey all had a turn at the keyboard and all seemed to have distinctive styles…very interesting to have such close points of comparison.
As seems to be usual with Daly’s evenings of music, there was a good mix of generations on stage there and a very vivid sense of a living tradition. They all got together at the end and played the Tarbolton set and it lifted off the ground, in my opinion. Truly a joy to attend!
