John Mcsherry - question?

Hello,

I wonder why John Mcsherry doesn’t like keys & stopkey? He only use keyles chanters. Would it be disturbing for his technique of playing? I know that many other highly respected players have them all, Thank you, Regards

Top proff. pipers knows what they want…McSherry and Ilduff (atfirst ligth)made concert here with practise sets(no drones at all with ) awesome.

Hi

John’s original had no keys on it, purely becuase Sean Mc Aloon didnt put keys on chanters and thus John developed a feel for this chanter. This is the chanter he played until quite recently ( and probably still would be if it had not been for unforesenn circumstances). His new B. Koehler chanter has a c natural key on it.
It just boils down to what you get use to. There is no real element of it interfering with “certain styles” of piping. i.e John wouls still play the same even with a seven keyed chanter

This new chanter can be heard on Johns debut solo Album “Soma” which is due for release on 6th March this year.

Hope this helps

Why not call it for what it is??..His pipes were stolen.

I don’t know the answer specifialy, but I would guess it really comes down to you play what you’ve got. and that’s all there is too it… as for me I have a fully keyed chanter. actually I might even have 2, but I don’t play my flat set enough to remember, but I don’t use the keys much at all. I just got them in case. but on another thought. the solo CD from John is something that should blow minds left and right. It’s long over due. and I’ll be looking for one.

True, but as there is a separate thread on that issue i thought best to just keep this about the topic in question

As regards to the stop key, lots of pipers dont find the need for one, also if designed poorly they can be quite troublesome and get in the way when playing the chanter.

Thanks guys for comments

Well, lets say you have a chanter with one c-natural key. What can be achieved with cross-fingering in that situation? Are other accidentals available?
