I heard Vassar Clements at a tiny venue here in Evanston a long time ago and after the incredible show, as he was walking away from the “stage,” he put his hand on my shoulder as he passed me as I was enthusiastically applauding. I’ve never heard a fiddler in that style that I have loved more. Eye- and heart-opening, and that simple gesture has meant something to me over the years.
I’ve got a DVD of the Grisman Garcia thing that is excellent.
Thanks for the reminder on Old and In The Way. I saw it at Barnes and Noble a couple weeks ago. I think I’ll hop over today and see if it’s still there.
I saw Vassar a few years ago. Great fiddling. Unique. Too bad I don’t know anything about fiddle playing or I’d probably appreciate it even more.
You’ve got to whisper binary sweet-nothings into its microphone and touch the keyboard just right. Turns 'em on every time. Not that I’ve tried it, mind you.
