i know this question has been asked numerous times, but i don’t know if i have ever seen the answer.
what is the difference between the burke soprano d narrow and wide bore sessions?
is the wide bore louder?

I have both. The wide bore is louder than the narrow. The narrow has very little chiff, and a kind of softer, more pure sounding tone. The wide bore, in contrast, sounds stronger in tone. The narrow clogs more, the soap treatment is mandatory. For a session, you’d want the wide bore, for sure. The narrow bore would be more suited to solo playing.

I just received a Burke brass narrow bore D a few days ago. I’ve had the wide bore version for several months. I expected the narrow bore to have dramatically less volume, but it doesn’t. The wide bore is louder, but not by a great deal. My band mates agree with this assessment. Like Tony said, the narrow bore has a slightly purer and sweeter tone. The wide bore is better for sizable and/or loud sessions (even the rather modest difference might be very apparent when playing with loud instruments), but the narrow bore is fine for small group playing and, of course, great for solo. Both are wonderful whistles, by the way.
I wonder if some recent alteration in design has increased the volume of the narrow bore, compared to earlier versions? Certainly everything I’d read before suggested that the narrow bore is considerably quieter than the wide bore.

I’m ressurecting this thread from a long time ago to clarify something. Tony, by “wide bore” do you mean what mike calls “standard bore” i.e. Brass pro session DBPS or do you mean “wide bore” as in the Brass wide bore (old style) DWBB?
If anyone has any sound clips of standard brass D and narrow brass D, I’d sure love to hear 'em
Hi,
I don’t want this to sound like an advertisment,
but for clarification, I just wanted to say that the new D Brass Pro narrow bore and it’s aluminum counterpart are not the same as the old D narrow bore. These new whistles are purer and louder while losing none of the sweetness of the older model and have delrin lined heads and O’ring slides, making them much less likely to clog.
