I’m just curious. How much and in wich ways does the Irish bagpipe differ from the tinwhistle?
Is the fingering positions pretty much the same?
When listening to music and looking at videos, it seams that everybody is playing the bagpipe so damn fast
How is that even possible?
I’ve been playing tinwhistle for a while now, though I havn’t been taking any lessons since there are nobody where I live who teaches irish instruments. But I think it would be fun to just try the bagpipe, though I suppose it’s like starting all over again, right?
And a bagpipe costs a fortune, am I right?
Pipes - a very different beast than the whistle. Check out the uilleann forum for all the FAQs you were afraid to ask about!
Though in a nutshell, the fingering is very similar. The uilleann pipes have two extra holes - one on the reverse side of the chanter at the top (referred to as a “back D”), as well as another at the front bottom of the chanter. Pipes can have keys to give further sharps, but not necessarily.
On speed: best played with rhythm, and expressiveness, speed is one of the last considerations (please!). I’ve seen some wicked fast whistle players!
Price? Priceless! Potentially 500 to 1000x more expensive than your standard Generation whistle.
Do check out the uilleann forum though - we’re surly but fun!
Sorry all for the choice of language, I wanted to reply but was in a hurry, it was easier this way.
Uilleann Pipe players spend a lot of time tweaking the reeds. It’s a bit like the Oboe in this regard.
I bought a playable practice set of pipes and finally gave up on them. One notable player from old times stated that it takes 7 years to learn, 7 years to practice and 7 years to perfect (words to that effect). I started playing music at 50. I couldn’t wait till I was 71, so I took up the whistle.
Ostekjeks, dont give up yet! It is tough to learn the pipes by yourself. I was about to give up a few times when I had my practise set. Scandinavian climate will definately give you some trouble with leaks and non working reeds. It’s just not much you can do about it. But if you hang in there, things will start to sort themself out after a while.
You are only a ferry ride from the UK, go and see a piping teacher before you give up and let your set go.
The only resenblance they have is some of the fingering. Otherwise they are totally differrent animals. Uilleanns are difficult to learn, but sound gorgeous when played properly (ie: not by me). Most people use a D penny whistle to practice tunes for the uilleanns, and that’s about it. You’d best really love futzing with your instrument if you purchase uilleanns, and don’t buy a cheapo set.
