Not secret by any means. No cliche or stereotype starts in a vacuum.
The sad truth behind the phrase is indicitive of a phenomena I call “Stepfordism”. It’s the desire for uniformity and conformity at the expense of all individuality. I suppose the trend predates “soccer moms” and can be seen blossoming in the post WWII era. The constant influx of mindless advertisements has significantly contributed. I shouldn’t blame the advertisements though. People want to believe the claptrap fostered on them by modern media so this Stepford society of mindless drones is self perpetuating, like a hurricane.

Oh, it’s much much worse. Note the little soccer ball shape on backs of their vans. This complex electronic array works with the cell phone glued to their head and somehow ties in to their global reception net collective.
