Here’s what one of our board members wrote a few years ago.
I laughed out loud.
: First the bad one, Matt Molloy’s new CD is an utter disapointment
: compared with all his previous CD. It is not exiting at all, most
: of the sets start with some slow “new age” stuff that quite often
: sounds like out of a chieftains record. He plays the mason’s appron
: allmost exactely as in the live chieftain record. They are some nice
: pieces but they are few and far apart. As a traditional record it is
: quite a let down, maybe after so many years of hanging out with the
: chieftains the poor taste has rubbed off.
…
:To sum it up, the king is dead …
: (Name withheld to protect the stupid)
: Ps These oppinions are from the traditional point of view, so all you newagers: do not bother me with flames on the chieftains or other such nonsense.
Oh my God!!
Would the person who wrote that please stand up and tell us what drug he used when doing the crime!!!
"The king is dead"¤/&)%¤)/ WHAT?!!.. after listening to this album I found out that he was definetely more alive than most people on this planet!!
No,no,no, please come out, where ever you are, and tell us you’re terribly sorry, and you MAY be excused for this crime that could, in my music world, sentence you for an 8 figured years of enprisonment!!!
I don’t quite know whats the big deal about this really, that it has to be raked up, ridiculed, etc. So what about not being crazy about Molloy.
There’s no denying that he is very proficient at what he does. But honestly he doesn’t do it for me as much as Packie Duignan, Micho Russell, Catherine McEvoy, or Tara Bingham where flute music is concerned. And the CD that was being reviewed certainly wasn’t his best recording either. The only thing memorable for me about that CD is Paddy Raffery’s lilting - I think Mr. Rafferty should really release a CD of that!
Chieftains = New Age???
I can agree on the fact that they are not 100% traditional all the time but New Age??!!
Are you guys talking about the Shadows on Stone cd or has he released a new one after that? I loved that cd atleast. There are some slow air tunes with cello accompaniment that I really love, but the reel sets (Crib of Perches/Carmels, Masons Apron and The Sirius Reel etc) absolutely rocks.
I haven’t heard all the flute recordings you guys talk about here but I’ve heard some and I’ve heard Wooden Flute Obsession etc, so I have a bit to compair to and Molloy is my favurite player, no doubt.
I wonder who is really stupid. Your man was expressing an opinion and a valid one too as far as I am concerned. Personally I went completely off Molloy’s playing after buying his second recording, [Heather Breeze?], I can enjoy some of his stuff but find some of his output unbearable and there are loads of fluteplayers I’d rather listen to. So what?
I second Peter. MM is a wonderful player but not my favorite. I don’t listen to his CDs as often as I listen to other players. Technically MM is superb. But I often feel the music is cluttered. I feel the same way about Joe Derrane’s box-playing. And I would much prefer to listen to Mary MacNamara than to Noel Hill. The music is not about ornaments per square inch.
BTW, Peter, I am in fact that very same tune you referred to.
