Indian Whistle

While I was out helping set up tents in this year’s 3-day breast cancer walk, I noticed a man sitting on a bench. He was playing a whistle, which frankly delighted me and I went up to him and asked him what kind of whistle that was. His companion said it was an “Indian whistle.” (not the Native American Indian, I’m assuming) It was about…13 inches long, probably nickle, not conical, looked like a Shaw, no logo that I could see.
He didn’t seem to be playing any specific tune, it sounded like he was improvising…

Any of you seen or heard an Indian whistle before?

Could it have been one of those “made in India” whistles they sell on ebay?

Although I didn’t see anything specifically labeled an “Indian whistle”, you may want to check out this website:

It has quite a selection of folk instruments from around the world.

Will O’Ban

I’ve owned two, one good, one bad.

No brand, made of tubular yellow metal with fairly rough soldering. Neither is a beaut.

I saw them in a music shop and bought a low A, just to see. It was excellent; a lovely player with a clear and expressive voice. I liked it so much I went back and bought a low B, but that one wasn’t as good.

However, for less than twenty bucks in total I got a lovely low A.

I try not to thnk about the lead that might be in that solder, however.
