Ideas for Easter music?

Hi all,

I have agreed to play at church on Easter, and now, of course, I need to think about WHAT to play. Two to three minutes of music is all we need. Do any of you have suggestions for what might sound nice with whistle and guitar for Easter?

Thanks very much,

Laura

Anything that O’Carolan wrote is nice. Si Bheag, Si Mohr or Planxty Irwin work.

Thanks, Michael.

Those are great suggestions, and nice and easy to put together.

Thanks for the reply,

Laura

If it’s not a Church where they sing traditional hymns, then Onward Christian Soldiers and He is Risen come to mind. Everybody thinks of Christmas carols as the best church music, but some of my favorite hymns are the Easter ones, and it seems that more and more churches are getting away from REAL hymns.

I’ve heard The Lord of the Dance done as a nice reel. I have a vinyl lp of The Corries, a Scottish group that do it. There are extra notes between the word notes, of course.

Take My Hand is a nice, cheerful melody.

Here’s my very favorite Easter hymn. It is wonderful and easily playable on whistle. Christ ist erstanden It’s hymn #184 in the 1982 Episcopal Hymnal-Christ the Lord is Risen Again.

The link below will give you the score.

I searched and the following link is the best version I found of this tune- (I refuse to use midi as an example of anything- this is a real men’s choir. Now granted it’s in German, but scroll down to where the little icon is that you will recognize as a “listen” icon and click on either Hoher or Geringer and you will hear part of this tune.

It is wonderful. Come to think of it, I may just play it at our church this Easter. Luckily as the organist I do have some say in what music is used.

When searching for hymns, I usually look at the Cyberhymnal:

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the great suggestions and ideas for finding appropriate tunes. I appreciate your help!

Laura

Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring is very nice on whistle. Works well in the key of G on a D whistle.

That is a very good site. Here’s another one, containing the entire United Methodist Hymnal:

Have a great St. Patrick’s Day and a great Easter!

‘Easter Snow’ is a lovely tune. Snow on Easter is said to be good luck, representing the blanketing of the world in the purity of Christ.

“Easter Snow” may be particularly appropriate for us here in Wisconsin! We had several more inches of good luck last night. I’ll see if I can locate a recording or the written music to learn this one.

Thanks,

Laura

I’m familiar with the Seamus Tansey version, from his album ‘Easter Snow’. I think it may also be on ‘Wooden Flute Obsession Vol. 1’ as well.

I would suggest listening to Seamus Ennis’ version (it was his pet tune and he named his (mobile) home after it), even liam O Flynn and Ennis’ daughter Catherine on the church organ would do.
