ICONS Festival 07

ICONS Festival- August 10,11,12 Canton, MA

Irish Connections is a festival of Irish culture that has been celebrated annually in various forms, under the auspices of the Irish Cultural Centre of New England, since 1990. In 2004, its location moved from Stonehill College to the organization’s own impressive and growing campus in Canton, MA just 25 minutes south of Boston.

2007 will mark a re-launch and re-design of the Festival to reflect the new cultural directions of Ireland and its Diaspora. This festival will celebrate the old and the new, traditional and contemporary, classic with avant-garde, how music is enjoyed in Ireland and how it is enjoyed throughout the world in the Irish style: friendly, welcoming, adventurous and spirited.

There is an amazing line-up, including the Black Crowes, Paddy Keenan, the Saw Doctors, the Dropkick Murphys, Black 47, Dervish, Uncle Earl, Liz Carroll, Altan, Kevin Burke and Johnny B. Connolly, Nancy Griffith, and many many more.

What do The Black Crowes have to do with ITM? :boggle:

I wondered that myself. However, I’ve attended the past several years when it was held in June. Weather was often a problem. I’ve heard they were not successful financially. There was a very low, one-day ticket price. Since world class musicians like to get paid, a rainy Saturday can hurt. The event is at the Irish Cultural Center, which has a large, attractive suburban campus - many tents and outdoor music venues. It’s always been organized around Irish music, not necessarily ITM.

I gather that this year they’re presenting music that has cultural connections. Trad Irish is connected to US folk etc. I’m going. Hopefully the August dates will work out. The Sat night line-up seems like a great mix of ITM, IM and folk.

As for the Black Crows, beats me. Isn’t there a web site that shows supposed musical-influence family trees?
