I just got a great collection of medieval and renaissance music and I’ve been using the whistle thus far to play with. I would like to get a more “tootier” sound rahter a “whistley” sound and would like to know what whistle has some of that “r” sound quality to it (as I wish to continue to use whistle fingering). Is this there where the Susato Kildare’s shine? Maybe other platic whistles too? Thanks.
Oh, I’ve got one for ya . . . this woman I play with–she shall remain nameless but she’s not a member of this board so I don’t mind posting this
–plays Boehm flute, mostly jazz style. She thinks she can play whistle, too, but I know better and so does any other ITM player. Let’s say she can make sounds come out of the whistle. Anyway, the whistle she uses is an older Sweetheart model and it sounds very much like a recorder. Especially since she uses a disgusting amount of vibrato (carries over from her flute playing I guess). Every time she pulls that thing out I cringe.
So the point, an older Sweetheart model, not the new ones you see on the Sweetheart site. Sorry, I couldn’t find a picture of one.

Eureka! Thanks, Grexrell, that’s done it! This is the one, looks exactly like it. The first whistle on the page.
Susato and Impempe are ‘flutey’.
I’m not familiar with Impempe whistles. Are they of good quality?
Hooow about learnign recorder?
there I said it ![]()
Seriously tho, recorder is a wonderful instrument within certain genres, before my tendonitis I played lots of van Eyck stuff and loved it. Nice break from the Irish stuff.
The older Sweethearts would be the ticket, but there is nothing wrong with a recorder. It’s the tool for the job at hand, so go ahead and use one.
Thanks guys and I do play recorder. I have a complete SATB set. I just fell for the whistle and can’t seem to put it down. Then I started playing some early music with it and it just felt right. Sure the recorder will enable more use of notes (more easily that is), but that sweetness of the whistle really sounds good with the renaissance.
I have some Van Eyck collections from Theimo Wind but I haven’t gotten to them yet with the whistle.
Impempe is very good quality. Ian turnbull, the maker has tried to combine South African Kwela and Irish music in his whistles. The whistle is all alluminium with a thick and wide bore. The sound is a flutey and very focused which makes it easy to hear from a very far distance without getting shrill. It blows very easy and my guess is that it can be run over by an elephant without it being damaged. And the price is low. Look at Ian’s website http://impempewhistles.co.za/5001.html.
There are a few threads about Impempe on C&F.

synergy, if you’re still looking for the sort of whistle you described in your original post Doc Jones has a Sweetheart whistle on his site. It’s one like I mentioned above, 5th from the bottom:
