Greetings all.
In April, after playing for about a year on my Tipple, I treated myself to the gift of a wooden flute. It’s an Ormiston Pratten. Amazing flute, beautiful tone (when I have an embouchure), big sound (when I have enough wind). It’s made me want to play a lot more, and consequently my playing has progressed a great deal.
Anyway, with winter coming on, I want to protect it. In Oregon where I live (the cusp of the “wet” and “dry” sides) I know the humidity changes from “why is there moss on my couch?” to “Why is my nose bleeding?” So I trolled the great Chiff and Fipple forums to find suggestions, and got a lot. The amount of flute maintenance knowledge here, while often argumentative, is very helpful!
I’ve ordered a Humistat package with humidifier and hygrometer, and saw all the notes on Rubbermaid containers, but can’t get past the thought of setting a plastic container on my piano (which is where I want my flute- handy and quick to grab for me). I started looking at humidors, given the notes of some others. I figure spending 10% of the cost of my flute on something to protect it isn’t really a bad cost to me, and it’ll make sitting it out in the living room more acceptable to the boss ![]()
Has anyone purchased any humidors they can recommend for a 3 piece flute? My Ormiston’s center piece is about 12.5 in, making this glass-topped humidor seem ideal- given it’s size, ability to see my pretty flute inside, etc.
Anyone have good experiences with other small humidors, big enough for 3-piece flutes, maybe two of them (in case this one finds a friend)?
Cheers,
John Metta
