How to pronounce Uilleann

A woman from Co. Donegal near Letterkenny told me this eve that she and her folk refer to them as the Ukeleliann Pipes. :tomato:

I say “eelann”. But then, I’m no piper. Just stoped by to say hi.
Hi!

I like “union”! Screw Flood and his nonsense. Since his time, many have tried to prop up his tired arguements. I spoke with an old (in 1974) Donegal couple, who said that they never heard the pipes refered to other than as union pipes by any native speakers they knew until recient times.

Ted

Oh, but Ted, “union” isn’t politicly correct! :astonished:

Hasn’t had any historical/political basis for a while, either. Maybe An Gum should declare them Republic pipes!
I have a musical instruments book written by a Ukranian, he speaks of the “Villean pipes of Iceland”!
Grattan Flood was a writer who was big in Gaelic League circles around 100 years ago; he proclamed “Uilleann” to be the correct name for the pipes, and “Union” to be a corruption of it, based on a line in, well, the Merchant of Venice. Some other, earlier, equally slipshod academics had been puzzling over this notion before him. It’s been detailed by Breathnach and others quite well; this is why some sources refer to the pipes originating in the 16th or 15th century.
Flood isin’t a source to take at face value, they say; the funniest slip I’ve read about concerns his assertation that “Pipers” formed a Guild of some sort in 17th century Dublin. Sean Donnelly says the “Pipers” in question are plumbers…

i’m still waiting for a practice set, pronounced: “illen” pipes.

Alien.

One of the funniest sustained three hours I’ve ever spent comprised beer, three fairly knowledgable pipers, and the works of Mr Gratton Flood. They are hilarious.

Personally, I pronounce it “Irish”. Much clearer.

Nano gets my vote! “Alien” pipes it is!

By the way, “union” I believe as it pertains to this instrument has nothing whatsoever to do with politics. You may find in the C&F archives [even] some explanation of the term …

Not that it matters as it now seems to be an historical term.

Hows about Villain pipes? Or if made of boxwood or holly, Vanilla pipes?
