High D with easy upper second octave

I’m looking for a high D with an easy to reach upper second octave that’s not too expensive. I’m wondering about the Killarney, how that matches my needs. And how that would compare with various Freeman tweaks or the Cillian O’Briain Improved. Your thoughts please.

Timothy Potter is good in that regard

You’re the only one who can address what fits your needs, you’ve bought an sold enough whistles ‘played only a few minutes’ at this point to indicate you know quickly what you are looking for.

I think the Killarney is fine. And so is a Sindt. The Cillian O Briain is more free blowing (I played a dozen or two of them recently and found the batch they were part of surprisingly consistent and all fine. Although it also meant the few lovely odd ones out that were part of batches I tried previously weren’t there this time) and maybe I would prefer the COB but I am just as happy playing the Generations or Oak that I have, they’re all the same type / in the same bracket. You may consider the Timothy Potter ones, they’re fine but sometimes I feel they’re a bit restricted (for want of a better description, they’re a bit like an over-tweaked instrument). They’re nimble enough though.

I am never quite sure how to react to questions like this, at the end of the day only you can decide what suits you best out of a range of whistles that will all do the job.

Killarney would definitely meet those needs. Very easy and sweet top end.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Other than the Killarney, I think Mack Hoover’s whitecaps have one of the best upper octaves for such an affordable price. He’s a great guy to talk to and can customize whistles to suit your needs.

Thanks for that. BTW I haven’t been able to access the Timothy Potter web-site. Anyone know what’s happening there?

Look up the previous thread(s) on the subject. Search :‘whistlemaker update’

Though my sample size was as small as could be- one whistle of each- I found that my Killarney had a tiny bit more sweet/nimble 2nd octave than my Sindt. The Sindt had a slightly more solid tone, not louder, but somehow more round and stable.

My c1980 Feadog was more nimble than either, and also having a more complex/darker tone than either the Sindt or the Killarney. But the Feadog’s low notes weren’t as solid as those.

I recently stuck another MK1 Feadog head I had on a Generation Eb body and it’s my go-to Eb now. That Feadog plays differently, a tiny bit fuller/rounder, a tiny bit less sweet, than the other one.

Thanks Richard. I think the Killarney may be what I’m looking for.
