Hey...

I told ye before, I’ll tell you again.

He is not a God among men, He is a God among Gods.

Absolutely amazing..

If you only buy one CD in your lifetime..buy this one.

Slan.

Well, yeah, that’s all well and good, but can he do Japanese tongue twisters under threat of consequences too horrific to mention?

Tom

I’ve seen worse. Hmm, maybe if they set those crotch-a-pults on fire first … :smiling_imp:

djm

He sure as hell sings as though he’s taken a few too many of the crotch-a-pults. In 1962. :stuck_out_tongue:

I haven’t listened to any of Dylan’s “new” stuff. Can he, or does he ever need to hit high notes? I imagine that would be the toughest part about being a 60 something musician. I saw Steely Dan in Philadelphia this year and while it was a great show, they avoided certain songs, because Fagen can’t hit the high note any more :frowning:

The Guardian only gave it four stars out of five and you know how much I rely on the Guardian.

Steve (long-time Dylan cynic and I don’t want allies popping up! )

Click the link to buy his new CD and you will see a page with samples of the songs.

But, but, but…I’ve already bought one cd in my life!!! :boggle:
Are you suggesting I practice polydiskamy!!??

I’ve heard it said that Bob Dylan is a horrible vocalist (much like Britney Spears), but that his body and dancing are so appealing (also much like Britney Spears’) that his singing voice doesn’t really matter. Or maybe it was his lyrics, instead of his body. I forget. But the distressing point remains the same: that to be a commercially successful singer you don’t really need to know how to sing.

His dancing? Bob Dylan dances??!?!! What have I been missing?

Listened to the samples and it takes me back…yep, I’ll probably have to get this one.

Susan

Or to criticize a performer, you don’t really need to know what you’re talking about.

Dylan knows how to sing. He sang harmony to Joan Baez when they toured together, and many who heard them said his vocal performances were amazingly good.

When Dylan performed for Woody Guthrie during the time Guthrie was in the hospital at the end of his life and Dylan befriended him, Guthrie commented that this young performer wasn’t much of a songwriter, but what a great voice.

Dylan knows exactly what he’s doing with his voice. If you go to Amazon.com and listen to clips from all the tracks on Modern Times, you’ll hear him use his voice in different ways on different songs.

One thing that’s been said of Dylan …

He doesn’t go to his audience. His audience has always had to come to him. He does what he wants to do, and if you don’t like it or if you don’t understand it, he couldn’t care less.

Best wishes,
Jerry

I do know what I’m talking about, though. I sing (I try to, at least, I’m taking lessons again after a break of a lot of years).

Don’t get me wrong–I do like Bob Dylan. I have 2 of his CDs and many on which he appears and even more still of other people doing covers of his songs. I just don’t know why he’s so extremely popular (“popular” isn’t even really strong enough–look, dubhlinn even calling him “God”). I guess in some sense I have one foot in the boat with Steve Shaw but the other one in with dub… I hope they don’t decide to sail in different directions! :stuck_out_tongue:

…

I have not hijacked this thread. Is it about Bob Dylan or not? If it’s not about him, then perhaps my head isn’t screwed on right and I’ve completely misread it, but I’m as reasonably certain as possible that I’m on topic. I apologize fully if I’m not on topic in the preceding replies. :sniffle:

Now it’s a thread about Cranberry’s singing lessions.

Best wishes,
Jerry

I have to head out in 2 minutes, but here is a review of Bob Dylan’s voice from the Washington Post a couple weeks ago:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/20/AR2006082000713.html

And here’s a quote, from that article, about Bob’s performing:

One reviewer’s OPINION. Not gospel. This thread is finished. Sorry, Dubh. Some people just can’t resist, can they.
