Help! What would you pick!

I am going to be buying a Burke High D whistle, which one…Aluminum ProSession or Brass ProSession!

Whoaaa!

I have both and find that the alpro is easier to play in the higher register. Also the tone of the alpro is cleaner (purer). I like them both, but for ease of playing, I would choose the alpro.

I find the brass more predictable in different temps.

But as a handy guy yerself Roy, you will be super-impressed by what Mike has done with aluminum. A tad more delicate and scratchable, so if yer rough, get the brass. Just think about what you know to be true about those metals and use your intuition.

You just can’t go wrong either way. I have both. I made my debut as a whistler in a band the other night with the AlPro and it carried well over the fiddle, zouk, guitar and percussion.

I hate the smell of brass.

Jessie

isn’t jessie sweet.

I think its “cutie-pie”

But seriously, Jessie, yer a metalsmith of course with the jewelry and all. i had never thot of it even having a smell tho it has a kind of cold clammy feel compared to the Al which is like aviation equipment or something…

I think the idea is that all the whistles will eventually smell like Guiness anyway.

I’d rather them smell like brass.

I’ve owned both and MUCH preferred the brass.

Both are nice.

You know, they employ the same design. It’s a good bet that you are experiencing regular variation from one whistle to the next as opposed to material difference. I MUCH prefer aluminum over brass, both for the longevity of the finish and the smell.

I own and use both. The Brass is has an incredible big sound that you just can’t get out of the al. The al whistle plays very easy with a bit of a smaller sound. Both have fantastic pitch. Determine the venue you are playing in and make a decission. Also check out the Chips and Snips for examples of the sounds. It is audibly quite clear.

I hate the smell unlacquered brass leaves on my hands as well.

Having said that, I’d go for the brass every time - the Aluminum and Composite Burkes I’ve played lacked enough personality of tone for my liking. OTH, The brass soprano Burkes I’ve owned sounded much more interesting.

Brass smells?

Philo

I have both of his whistles. I play the Aluminum more in public. As for the smell of brass, being an old trumpet player, I guess it doesn’t bother me. It never occured to me.

I got my AlPro from Song of the Sea, and they played both whistles over the phone for me, which gave me some sense of the differences. The brass has a bit more chiff, whereas the aluminum is very pure and smooth across the range, which is what attracted me to it. One of things I like most about this whistle is the incredibly smooth octave transition.

Yeah Phil… certain metals do that. If you don’t have brass, take a penny and rub it between your fingers, especially if your hands perspire. Have a whiff of that and tell us what you think.

I have taken all of your opinions and have decided to go with the Burke High D-BrassPro Session, Thanks for the help!!!

Hm…With bladesmithing skills, you ought to make your own! Do you realize that you could make the worlds first damascus steel whistle???
