I just got my first whistle
(a clarke D for the record) and am having a problem. I can’t sustain low notes! When i try and play the low D for instance, it wavers between Low D and High D! Am I blowing wrong?!?
Please Help!
In short yes, you’re blowing too hard. Try starting with a G (three fingers down) and putting fingers down one at a time till you get to all fingers down.
Also, try blowing a high d as OXX XXX i.e. first finger off and all others down. Then stop your breath with the tongue, put the finger down, and blow again, a little softer. Low D!
I love my Clarke whistle!
Also, a tweaked inexpensive whistle (Clarke,Shaw,Generation…) can make the notes more stable and helps your breath act more effeciently. My original un-tweaked Clarke is the same way. You have a different “breath force” for each note. It takes practice.
Thank you!
Tweaked? ![]()
Oh yes! A tweak can be something as simple as flattening the top of the windway on a Clarke (I’ve done this on mine) the reduce the breath required, to filing, filling, or replacing the blade of the fipple (the blade is the long flat ramp), to filling the under-blade cavity with blu-tack, for no obvious reason except sometimes it seems to help, to drilling extra thumbholes in the back for those C or F naturals!
Any whistle which is no longer exactly as it came from the factory is “tweaked”.
Sorry I didn’t explain the “tweaked” better. You can purchase a great tweaked whistle from Jerry Freeman or he could tweak a whistle you already own.
Woodpecker, If you go to the ‘Whistle Shop’ online they have a nice assortment of Jerry Freeman “tweaked” whistles for sale as well as, of course, the untweaked versions. mike
Elderly instruments has some Jerry Tweaked feadogs (he usually does generations) for about half price right now too. At least tha’s what the site says.
Actually a discussion of tweaked whistles could turn out to be a long drawn out affair. It means you take a whistle, usually cheap, and fiddle with it, sand on it, glue on it, etc…and make it play better. Sometimes an awful wistle can be turned into a jewel. At the least a cheapo can almost always be improved.
A bit early to tell you much. You can do a search of the site for tweaks or tweeks if you like though.
I would even recomend going for the Jerry tweaked sweetone. I have one, and it and just an amazing whistle for onle around 15 bucks.
thank you, but i think i should practice some more with this wistle before i buy a new one.
Look..you’re going to end up with like..50 whistles. Stop resisting. Buy two or three at once. Come over to the dark side Luke… ![]()
Shhhhh, i’m trying to fool myself into thinking i won’t buy anymore. ![]()
Oh. That’s cool. I lie to myself all the time too. That way I can maintain my aloof attitude without guilt. ![]()
