Guitar playing in ITM

With guitar overall I am no newbie, but I don’t have much experience from applying guitar playing in ITM.

What should a beginner think about? Any specific tuning or is EADGBE okay?
Any technique tips?

Thanks in advance

What are you trying to do? Accompaniment, fingerpicking, flatpicking?

Well.
A little of everything I guess. I know how to handle a guitar, but I don’t know the specifics of ITM guitar-playing.

tuning is your personal thing
I’ve friend playing at sessions EADGBE
others are using DADGAD, dropped D or double dropped D.
listen to as much recordings as you can
find a guitar player that you enjoy most.
I’d recomend
Stephen Cooney,
Donogh Hennesy
Paul Mehan
John Doyle
Seamus O’Dowd
Doyle recorded DVD tutorial showing his style of playing.
check it out
and have fun

Thanks. I’ll check out the music from those guys, and try to get hold of the DVD.

I think I understand the rhythms pretty much, and I guess it’s mostly personal how you want to play those, as long as it sounds right.
I’ve noted that some guitarists in ITM play bass lines along with the chords… but maybe it isn’t that common and also just a personal preference.

But concerning tuning. I am open to try different tunings, if they are generally easier to play when it comes to ITM. Is that the case?

Have a listen to this (Arty McGlynn accompanied by Paul Brady - two masters in their own right):

Also, there’s a CD called Masters of the Irish Guitar which I would highly recommend.

Finally, two books worth getting your hands on are Traditional Irish Guitar by Paul de Grae and the Irish DADGAD Guitar Book by Sarah McQuaid.

Definitely how to play guitar in Celtic music.

Tony MacManus DVD is absolutely brilliant. Especially if someone is interested in finger picking.
Guy just sits there and talks about his instruments
and plays tunes.
I really like that his so relaxed on this video.
not to mention that he has few beautyful insteuments there.

Heck yes.

Well, I guess the best thing to do, then, is find someone
whose playing you like and emulate them. I haven’t found
a better way to learn ITM guitar than just by playing and
listening to good players at session.

I tend to use standard tuning for accompaniment, and
can finger- and flat-pick tunes in Am, Em, G pretty easily
in that tuning. Though I’m trying to get into a little Drop-D
accompaniment thanks to eskin:
