I finally got myself a whistle, a cheap Generation D. I am still trying to get the hang of playing Doh ray mi… I cant get the upper Doh to play though sounds squeaky (top hole uncovered)
Sounds like you may be overblowing the note.
Play the lowest octive D and slowly increase the pressure/speed of the air until the note just breaks into the second octive. If this is what you are doing then you will soon figure out what it takes to hit that note.
Also try it with all fingers down, some whistles like this.
I think I am getting the idea of how hard to blow the notes, Made a wee tune with the do ray mi doing like four blows each lol. Sounds pretty cool.
How do I do Frere es Jacques?
Awesome! Good luck on your Whistling!
I found the best thing at first when trying to grow in the first few days, was trying mimic small songs I know. Not able to read sheet music I found that It was the best way to get some sort of a start. But then again you may know how to read sheet music.
Eric
Sheet music to me is like looking at some strange mathematic equation.
Actually i can read it if given time but if I were to have it in front of me I couldnt play straight from it. I would be starting and stopping and asking myself “Is that a C or a D” Then go through the way of remembering them FACE and Every Good Boy Deserves Food
Which is exactly how I started. But I persevered and am really rather glad I did. Although the dots and scratches really aren’t necessary at all for learning tunes (especially in the trad music aural tradition), they really are a useful tool later on, imho.
You might find the Gen responds well to the blue-tack tweak, mine all did. Takes a bit of the shrill edge off the top end of the whistle.
Breath control, like everything else, takes practice.
D’you wanna laugh? Record yourself noodling on the whistle now, while it’s still all new to the fingers, lips and brain. Play the recording back to yourself in the weeks, months and years to come…if that doesn’t crack you up nothing will!
Blue-tack trick?
I may record myself and publicly humilate myself infront of you guys just for a laugh.
I am still thinking of buying that Sweetone whistle. But I dont know. :S Maybe a couple weeks.
Yup. It’s on the main website here: http://www.chiffandfipple.com/tweak.html
Basically, you dunk the head in a mug of hot (not boiling) water, then pull the head off. Then bung some blue-tack into the head (fipple) to fill up the cavity that exists under the windway. I’d steer clear of the other advice about taking sandpaper and stuff to the fipple blade at this stage in your whistling career though! Then smear a light coating of cork grease (or chapstick, or vaseline) around the top of the whistle tube and push the head back on. Voila.
Holy…!! I wasn’t suggesting anything of the sort, but keeping a private recording of yerself made now will a) not only give you a good chuckle in years to come but b) serve as a benchmark for measuring your progress as you get better. Sadly I did not do this meself, and wish I had.
Yeah, you will. And later a Gen F (they’re really quite sweet little whistles), then maybe a Bb, then maybe an Alba Q1, oh and there was that Clarke’s Original others mentioned, and then the O’Briain Improved, and the Water Weasel, and oooh look an Overton!.. oooh oooh and a Burke…!
Hmmm I dunno about pulling the head of it off, dont want to ruin it now. £3 is a lot of money for a student would you know.
lol
And that is not even the WOODEN WHISTLES!!! Bleazey, Shultz, Bussman, Grinter, Swayne, Greenwood are just a few of them.
I know… I have a Busman on order! And a Laughing Whistle on the way!
I just didn’t want to frighten poor pandabean.
Much!

Im not frightened of people blowing whistles. runs off and cowers
pandabean,
I would suggest buying the Deluxe Learn-to-Play Tin Whistle Kit w/Sweetone D whistle ( http://www.pennywhistle.com/clarkepage.html ). I bought this kit and LOVE it. It teaches you to read sheet music at a slow pace (which I needed), aswell its has a great deal of fun songs to use as you get better. Aswell, as songs you can use as a beginner. Best of all it comes with a Clarke Sweetone. IMO every new whistler should start with this kit.
Wow, I sound like a commercial…
Pandabean.
IN What part of Scotland do you stay
pandabean,

Lots of folk on this forum recommend the Ochs method. I have not tried that one though and so I can’t speak from personal experience.
Im gonna try and learn by ear and from pieces of info on this website and other stuff.
Also can anyone recommend any good starter tunes?

And once you get to this point, you can consider yourself a member of the WhOA group.
Is it normal when starting out that one finger comes down before the other? For example I want to play a D coming from a G, one of my fingers goes down before the other.
