Groups Similar to Planxty and Bothy Band

don’t forget donal lunny’s eponymous album from about 1987 (sean og potts) and his ‘sult’ band ‘coolfin’ recording with john mcsherry

Also, Na Connerys.

I second the recommendation for Cran.

I think to a certain extent, it’s difficult to recapture the sound and feel of a band that’s breaking new ground. Lots of guitar bands have come and gone, but none are quite the Beatles.

The stuff I find I really enjoy listening to these days is by individual artists - people like Dave Sheridan, MacDara Ó Raghallaigh, etc. For what it’s worth.

Just discovered another new group or new to me… “Open the Door for Three” not to be confused with Realta’s “Open the door for Three” Album. This new group has Kieran O’Hare as their piper and he sound pretty good with the fiddle and guitar. To me they are like a Plaxty or Both Band-Lite. Need to add a Bodran and mandolin I think. Hope they stay together and make more CD’s (available on CD baby and Itunes)

I hope they stay together too, Kieran is married to Liz the fiddler I believe. It is a great CD they produced!

The good news is: LAPD - Liam O’Flynn, Andy Irvine, Paddy Glackin and Donal Lunny. That’s Planxty minus Christy Moore but plus Paddy Glackin. They’ve been doing fairly small, intimate gigs around Ireland. I was at one a few months ago and it was a wonderful trip down memory lane.

The bad news for y’all over yonder is that they may not want to step on the intensive overseas gigging treadmill again. They may just want to keep appearances at a level that’s enjoyable for them as well as the audience. But keep an eye out for them.

I hope they make some records!

Or at least some well recorded youtube videos!

Just discovered a great program about The Bonny Men on TG4 online, viewable here:

Uh, do those guys realize that in the US we associate the acronym “LAPD” with fun things like a pack of cops pummeling the living crap out of Rodney King with their nightsticks, and the subsequent LA riots? :astonished: Or is that part of some, uh, joke? Kinda morbid if that. Maybe some sort of subliminal process at work there, deep down they just don’t want to bother touring the New World. Reminds me of the original acronym for Gulf War 2: Operation Iraqi Liberation…

A friend of mine has known Andy from way back, I’ll have to get the scoop on this.

Well it is Liam Andy Paddy Donal LAPD

The Los Angeles Police Department were known by LAPD for many years before the unfortunate Rodney King incident.

Some of us think of Sgt. Joe Friday played by Jack Webb and Harry Morgan as his sidekick.
“Just the facts ma’am.”

Which he never actually said. But why ruin a good meme?

If Andy Irvine uses his full name, they could be PLAID.

So what did Jack Webb of the LAPD REALLY say…Jack Webb’s ‘Joe Friday’ character typically used the phrase “All we want are the facts, ma’am” (and sometimes “All we know are the facts ma’am”) when questioning women in the course of police investigations.

Yep! I tried once to find a Dragnet audio or video clip of “Just the facts, ma’am” to illustrate a nefarious point … Only to find it’s one of those famous misquotes.

Yep… Now some like to disparage them with a broad brush.

Let’s leave politics out of it one way or the other (hint), but look forward to what Kevin can find out from Andy. - Mod

Do these guys have any CDs or other recordings available? All I seem to be able to find are YouTube videos.
