I find that I can cover the left hand holes with my fingertips but the pipers grip on the right hand feels more comfortable and I can stabilize with my pinky like I have learned on my high D. Is this ok? I can use my fingertips with my right hand but my pinky is floating in space. Thoughts?
Anything that works is OK, I think I’m safe in saying.
It is interesting how on High D whistles I use the end-pads and on Low D whistles I use ‘pipers grip’ and on various intermediate sizes my grip might vary on a particular whistle each time I pick it up.
The two might be combined, say end-pads on the upper hand and pipers grip on the lower hand, for example.
I do the same on the Bb. Tips on the left, pipers grip on the right. I even do it on a high D sometimes, for slow tunes

Just to add to this, I use the pipers grip for any whistle I play (started out as a piper and never broke the habit). I confess to not playing anything smaller that a high D for moral and health reasons so I don’t know whether my fingers could manage the pipers grip for higher keys.
My feeling has always been, whatever is comfortable for you…
