Grinchohedron Meets Exmas

Well, I made it thru the basic Christmas season fairly unfazed and with my Scroogely shell intact, and then 3 days after Christmas Day as I was driving back home from the hardware store, what should happen but the song “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” popped into my head. I was like, Now I get Xmas earworms??? My inner iPod has been blissfully free of such things 'til now. Why now??? And I hate that song. Argh. Argh. Make it stop. Please. Argh. To top it off, I was trying to figure out whether “shout” or “pout” came first, as if really mattered, and the earworm alone wasn’t bad enough.

And don’t tell me. I don’t want to know.

But I’m better now.

I’m not very fond of Xmasy music either. In fact, when I visited the ER on Xmas day it was playing over the PA system…which I believe aggravated my pain!

Funny thing though…I still practice Xmas tunes on my whistle just in case I get called upon.

Sorta like Danny Boy, eh?

Can’t say as I’ve really practiced any Xmas chunes, myself, though. If they want 'em, I might try, but I’d tell 'em I make no promises.

Actually, I don’t know Danny Boy! And I think I can be happy NOT knowing it

The running joke of the season at our house has been that ballad of sap, The Christmas Shoes. My 17 year old kid, Olivia, began singing it at me with overcooked pathos once she got a whiff of how blecchy I find it. Eventually I just gave in and sang along. Then we dreamed up a music video in which Jesus, on his way to the hospital, is waylaid and tackled by the kid’s buds, so the kid can run the shoes up to his dying mom before Jesus gets there.

I was asked to play it last night… they suffered.

I’d have put on my tortured artist face and flat out refused. There are some things that are just wrong.

I studiously avoided hearing that Christmas Shoes thing this season. Believe me, being in the car working each day, tuning in on all Christmas tunes stations, it took a quick reflex to hit a button while delivering mail, but, by golly I DID it!

I love Christmas music but that’s one that I just can’t take.

I have volumes of Christmas music, stacks of it in sheet form, some thirty or forty years old, so worn it’s practically falling apart. Love the stuff. My new favorite was memorized, The Snowman , for piano and I’m still playing it at least every other day-so I don’t loose the thing.

And you are going to put the ABC for it up when?

I’m happily clueless about “Christmas Shoes” but I did re-visit The Snowman when my 23 yr old daughter found it on YouTube and sent me the link a few weeks ago.

I searched in vain for the notation, in any form, many years ago when it first was released. So, yeah, when you gonna post the ABC’s???

Actually, I’d like to have more than ABC’s. I think I could pick out the melody line myself. What I’d really like to have is standard notation for piano, but maybe that’s too much to ask.

Santa, you listening?

I am happy to say that I recognize neither Shoes nor Snowman.

It pays to listen to NPR.

Here’s where I got the Snowman piano music. You can view the first page free. When you buy it you can print it off immediately. There are other versions out there, but they are simpler and don’t sound as good. I have to use Internet Explorer to get my sibilus scorch plug-in to work, I haven’t figured out how to get it going in Firefox.

The first part is easy on whistle, but after that, unless you’re an expert “half-holer” forget it.

Yes it does! Particularly for the classical music and radio reader. Be very very glad you do not know “Christmas Shoes”. Horrid. You do not need to hear this.

But you do need to hear the snowman(Walking in the Air). Lovely.

For a few moments, I ask all the cynics to step away from their computers
and leave the room. …Are they gone???

(looks both ways)
I like Chloe Agnew’s version!

OK, you cynics may come back now. You didn’t hear anything, right?

Since we have gone the way of all schlock, I thought I’d let everyone know that I am told - I haven’t had the pleasure, myself - that there’s now an Exmas song on the radio about “Dominick, the Italian Christmas Donkey (hee-haw, hee-haw)”.

WTF.

Oh, dear. Pity I’m on dialup. Oh, wait. It’s not a pity at all, is it? Why, no; no, it’s not.

Pity you not. I watched it… welll… the first third… maybe… ‘cute’…

Annie, I owe you one. Not everyone would “fall on the grenade” for Nano.

It’s country.

It has Rob Lowe.

It has a dying Mama in it, and heaven, and Jesus, and it rhymes sometimes.

My cup runneth over with glurge.

Eww. I don’t know what has protected me from ever hearing that song (maybe cause I only listen to NPR and the local college station?).

I just hope my luck continues to hold. The lyrics are bad enough.
