Whistle

Hi everyone since I have been lurking here for a long time, off and on since sometime in 2001. I thought it would be nice to take the plunge and introduce my self and say hi.

I started playing whistle in 2001. I tried the fife first since my kids all belong to fife and drum corps, but alas I did not have enough wind to play this instrument, or the regular flute. But then one day I discovered the whistle and bought a Gen D. I taught myself to read music and the rest they say is history. I am not a good player …yet; and have put my whistle down several times only to find myself drawn back to it after a few months.

My main instrument for the longest time was a black Sweetone - this is a great beginner whistle. Once I decided that the whistle was the instrument for me…well … … :smiley:

I currently am the very proud owner of 2 of Micheal Burke’s whistles, D and Bb, and a Copeland Low D. Unfortunately many years of being a stupid smoker make the Low D kind of hard for me to play, but a nice slow song is not too hard on me. I also have a Chieftain low G that I picked up in Ireland a couple years ago during a vacation… great souvenir, huh?! These are the whistles I play regularly.

I disposed of most of my cheapies once I discovered the difference a really good whistle makes for my playing. I keep 1 sweetone, and 2 susatos for travel, oh and a Feadog that is a real dog. I don’t know why I keep that thing!

Sounds like you have some very nice whistles there! I love Burkes in particular, really nice whistles.

Exiting the woodwork is a good move! Welcome! I’ve not got the patience or jaw control to lurk… I’ve got to butt in and add my two cents. I do try to make sure it is actually worth the investment before doing so … though some may not agree … :laughing:

Too late I tossed the whole thing. Thats ok though, I love my Burke composite Bb too much and would never pick up a weird Sweetone/Gen thingy. Half out of fear I would like it :astonished:

There are a few of us who inhabit the fife and drum world too. If you go to musters in CT, let me know! There was a very nice little session at one muster last year while the fifers were off doing their thing…Westbrook I think it was.
