Great cd sound samples

This link was mentioned on the uilleann list. I’ve been listening to the mp3 samples all evening. Very nice. Uilleann pipes, low whistle are fabulous.

O.K., I have listened too. It sure ain’t traditional Irish music. O.K. Tony,
what is this type of stuff called = “new age”
maybe? It IS haunting.

I have previously listened to some tunes by Fling because Toon, one of the band members is on a mailing list that I’m on. I just went to the page and listened to a couple of reels, an original and The Otter’s Holt. While the treatment, particularly backup and percussion, is fairly modern, certainly nothing about the what I have listened to would be considered new age. The backup used in such popular bands as Altan and Dervish is not really traditional either. Bouzoukis, citterns and DADGAD tuned guitars only date from the time of The Bothy Band and Planxty, which sometimes used two bouzoukis/octave mandolins. I don’t see how Fling is off the spectrum.

Lolly,
I’m thinking ‘New Age’ description is too far off for Fling. They would still be in the Irish Music catagory perhaps modern Irish instead of Traditional Irish Music. Keep in mind that the Fling members reside in the Netherlands. There might be some other musical influences present… whatever it is, I sure like it !!

Yes, I liked it too, I didn’t mean to sound
like I was ragging on them…
I am old - well 56 - and really HAVEN’T A CLUE what “new age” means. The other day
someone in the audience said the band I play is wasn’t very traditional and that we should make a “new age” album. I just smiled
politely cause I didn’t have an idea what new age Irish would sound like!
So what IS new age Irish??
Lolly

You can find David Arkenstone’s CD’s in the New Age section. I would think it’s safe to say he plays Celtic music… does some of that qualify as Irish music? Kinda.
You might want to give him a listen.

I’m not sure why you say that he plays Celtic music although I really don’t have a clue what “Celtic” music means. None of the titles refer to the usual motifs of “new age celtic”. On one page his music was described as “Cinematic new age rock”. Often music that I think of as being Celtic new age refers to Arthurian legends. Sometimes titles are taken from Lord of the Rings. Stuff like that. I just pulled out a tape called Avalon. It makes definite reference to being Celtic and has a sort of Celtic design on the cover. It’s not unpleasant. Simple melodies, simple harmonies. zzzzzzzzzzz…

Oh, I get it you guys;
New Age = ZZZZZZZZZZZ
O.K.
(It sure needs a good Penny Whistle to wake it up!!!)

Steve,
It’s not that big of a deal to be so specific as to what type of music Arkenstone plays. He has more than 20 CD’s out now and the range of style varies from song to song. Yeah, some if it gets sleepy, they all can’t be winners.
