Got any 27" bicycle wheels you don't need?

I found in the hayloft, a very nice vintage ten speed bicycle. I’ll clean it up, change to more comfortable handlebars and shifters from a wrecked mountain bike, and put it to use.

The other thing I need for it is a pair of wheels. It has worn out, sewup tires I can’t use, so I’ll have to replace the wheels and tires. Does anyone have a pair of 27" bicycle wheels they don’t need?

Best wishes,
Jerry

Is it not possible to adapt it for 700cs?

Maybe so. The difference would only require the brake pads to be moved 4mm, as far as I can tell from information I can find online. It looks like there may be that much room to move them on the calipers. What width would 700cs rims be?

I’ll have to do some more checking on the width before I can make sense of the choices.

They can be various widths, 13mm to 20mm. Are the hubs from the old wheels salvageable? Maybe you could get a shop to lace up some new rims of the old hubs? Would you be riding mostly on roads or a mix or…?

I’m trying to figure out a way to do this on the cheap. I can order new wheels for about $35 each, but I was hoping someone has some they don’t need.

I’ve assembled 11 working bicycles out of castoff ones I’ve picked up here and there so Arleen and the children can have bikes to ride. Now I’m trying to figure out how to put one together for myself.

Sorry, Jerry, I am using all of mine to create a new form of interior decoration. I have succeeded in creating a lot of consternation in my wife. That is good for something, anyway.

I have a substantial pile of scrap bicycle parts. If these would help your decorating, I can send them to you.

Goodwill and independent bike shops often have parts and bikes that need some servicing and the bike shop may have some suggestions. If the hubs are good, perhaps you could build them up with some rims pulled from a bad hub. Although building up a tire is not a user level repair. Good luck with the search.

If it has tubular tires it’s probably a high-quality machine. Putting 700mm wheels on it is a bit of an insult, don’t you think?

A few years ago I tried to get my 27in hubs and rims rebuilt but the builder refused because the hubs in particular were too clapped-out. So I put 700s on it, because that was all they had in that shop, but they just didn’t look right and the brakes, at the limit of their adjustment, never seemed to work optimally. After a year of so I went to a better shop and ordered a pair of new 27in wheels. The bike seemed to breathe a sigh of relief as soon as they were on.

I think you’re right.

In any case, somewhere there should be an old 27" ten speed in rough shape I can pull the wheels from. Or a set of wheels that’s extra for someone because they’ve switched for better ones.

Jerry

Do you have a local Freecycle? You might just want to look for an old 27" bike from which you can cannibalize parts.

I didn’t know about Freecycle. Just checked it out; I didn’t find any bicycles, but it’s a terrific resource. I’ll keep following it, as there are some other items I can use as well.

Thanks!

I found a guy on Craigslist who’s selling off a basement full of bike parts. He has used 27" wheels for $2, new for “less than ten.” I’ll drive over Saturday and get them.
