Good "Throaty/Raspy" low Ds.

I love the breathiness of my Chieftain V3. However, as a contrast, I’d like to get another low D with a harsher, dare I say, almost “Uilleann” sound.

I was thinking maybe the Howard? But then I thought it best to ask here first, since I can’t start throwing money round willy-nilly .

Uilleann pipes are reed instrument, you won´t get similar sound from any whistle.

However, my Overton in E (low E) has a nice edge - it´s described as “cosmic drainpipe” (probably difficult to understand, once you hear it, it makes sense).

That’s why I like my Howard. When it’s warmed up I get a great woody-flutey-edgy sound out of it.

As a rule of thumb, the wider the windway, the breathier the sound, if that helps.

Wot I mean is:

Something that sounds rough, or edgy, without having tuning issues. Maybe the beast doesn’t exist, or maybe one of youse has one.

I’m after someting that’s the antithesis of the breathy Chieftain V3. Perhaps its cheapo. Perhaps it’ll cost an arm & a leg. Perhaps its got a difficult stretch/big holes/small holes:

“DON’T FECKIN’ CARE!”

P.S. I’ve already emailed Colin

You need to try a Clarke original, if you haven’t.

you could always find out if there are sessions in your area, or other whistlers, and ask if you can try out a few others.

If you don’t like what you find it may be possible to get a maker to custom-make a whistle. I know that Ronaldo Reyburn can do it. Colin Goldie will customise. I think Mack Hoover has dropped out of whistlemaking for right now. Daniel Bingamon is another possibility, he loves to tinker and experiment with whistle design.

Do you like this kind of sound:

poor recording aside?

You might be talking about what I call a whistle that “honks”.
The best, for me, is the Burke Pro Viper. No low D I’ve tried has a bottom D that honks anywhere near as full/strong/loud as the Viper.

Some of the recordings on your website sound quite raspy compared to other manufacturers. Nice sounds.

I’ll try to find an mp3 to listen to, thanx.
