A number of years ago there was a thread of posts regarding a whistle like instrument powered by natural wind, like a chime, at a west coast university. I believe it was part of an outdoor exhibit or perhaps a performance art piece on acoustics. Any help on this old post would be greatly appreciated.
I am interested in building a large wind whistle/chime out of four-inch PVC for the yard.
There is a giant sculpture in South San Francisco called “Wind Harp”. It’s near Candlestick Park (3-com Park? What are they calling it these days?) I can’t remember the exact exit, but I believe it’s the Oyster Point exit. I’m sure someone else who knows the area better can fill in the details.
I’ve built some things like this using 2" PVC. One very important thing must be observed - You have to make to wind protector for the fipple - something shaped like a funnel to deflect air off away from the fipple - you also could use a funnel to introduce air into the windway.
Buy a PVC cap and close the opposite end and you’ll use half the amount of tubing.
I plan to put a few of these in the tower by my shop - I could imagine the nutty neighborhood kids hear the noises especially when they think it’s haunted.
