This may be old news to most people but there is a freeware on the net called Audacity. With this tool you can import tunes in various formats ie mp3 and then use it as a mixer. You can slow the tune right down without loosing pitch. I have been doing this on ‘Paddys Perambulations’ by Eoin Dillon and all the ornamentation can be worked out at a snails pace. It takes a little time but you can pull the curser back time and time again to hear exactly what is going on at any particular moment in the tune. Then just write the notes into a score program like Finali note pad (another freeware).

audacity is great, it’s fully open source (GPL), cross-platform (I use it on Linux and Unix, most users are probably on Windows and Mac OSX). You can contribute patches back, add features, etc. if you are so inclined and skilled. I use it for pitch shifting, speed shifting w/o pitch shift, and general editing.
