Hello all,
I’m selling (reluctantly) a narrow bore, full set in D, from Geoff Wooff.
I’ll be making a video, photos, PDF with information, sounds etc… as soon as I can find the time. But meanwhile, I’d like to advertise this set.
This is a once in a life-time opportunity for someone who is really serious about a quality instrument. Made by legendary pipemaker Geoff Wooff, the set is available for sale NOW, at the same price that I paid and without the enormously long waiting list that exists to own an instrument like this. I am not looking to make money on the sale, only what I paid myself, but importantly to find a good home with someone who really appreciates this kind of instrument.
The reason for the sale is because I can’t keep more than one set of pipes - For my musical / music work needs, I need to have a loud set, and thus a narrow bore set isn’t suitable, sadly. I have a wide bore set of pipes, but sadly need to part with this lovely narrow bore set. However, the set is by far the sweetest sounding set of pipes I’ve heard - and will be perfect for someone who enjoys playing in sessions, acoustic ensembles, with singers, or solo.
The pitch of the instrument is bang on 440. Which means, after a minute or two of warming up, the pipes will stick very close to 440. Unlike some wide-bore sets, that seem to creep gradually sharper and sharper, this set is made specially to play at 440. To best describe the sound of the set, if one imagines the sound of a C set - with all the rich harmonics - but in the pitch of D. The volume is highly suitable for playing with other acoustic instruments, as opposed to filling concert halls (like modern wide-bore) The volume of a medium sized session, or small ensemble, or in combination with fiddle / concertina / guitar / voice is perfect!
The chanter has a warm, distinct, round yet sparkly sound to it. Anyone who has heard Geoffs pipes before will appreciate the tone they deliver. The chanter is fully keyed, giving Eb (fingered), F natural, G sharp, Bb, and C natural. Intonation is great throughout the full range of the chanter.
The drones are in the traditional style, in so far as, the bass drone is straight. The drones deliver a reassuring and steady, very full sound. The sound of the drones can be comparable to flat sets in C or B, as opposed to the sound of wide bore drones in D.
The regulators are easy to play and blend well with the chanter. The volume of the regulators vs drones and chanter are very well balanced. They are not overpowering, but suspend beautifully between the volume of the drones and the chanter.
Currently, the set hasn’t been polished for a while (!) - and honestly look like a set of pipes from another time, in my opinion, more than 150 years old or so, rather than 10! Having said that, the pipes are in incredibly good condition and I refer only to the method of manufacture and the style of the pipes, not the condition that they are. They are in full playing condition.
The pipes are entirely made by hand - hand rolled silver tubing etc. The pipes come with original bellows, and original specially made sturdy wooden case.
For any enquires, regarding price, delivery, sound samples etc… can you please PM me. I’d rather discuss details such as this privately, due to the value of the set. Thank you for respecting that, and not publicly speculating on price / high jacking the post.
Thank you ![]()
For those who are not seriously interested in the set, but are quite keen to see the set / hear / see video etc, I may post something here in a wee while, when I have time. Please e-mail me at calumfrancisstewart(at)gmail(dot)com
Many thanks,
Calum
