Generations revisited

Mmm Hey all,

I recently was packing some things (we’re getting ready to move, as soon as both loans go through - ours and the buyers’), and I happened upon my Generation D’s (one is an original brass, while the other is a Folk), and it should be noted at this point that even when I tweaked these two whistles, I still had a little difficulty getting the tone just right. Well, I thought to myself “What the heck..” and piped a jig on my little Folk whistle… I was… Pleasantly shocked by the tone. Apparently, I was overblowing, due to my previous experiences with Susato, and my inexperience with whistles in general. Laughs Not to say I’m any more experienced now, just a little more adept at controlling my breath. I never thought I’d see the day when I absolutely LOVED my generations, though. grins

Yep, the better I get at breath control, the more I love my Generation brass D, too!

When I started playing the whistle the only whistles around were the generations, so I had to master all their quirks from day one. For me trying the susatos and the clares and feadogs came as a shock. Nowadays gens are all that I play, because, while I agree that ome of the modern whistles sound better, they don’t sound hundreds of dollars worth of better IMHO. Maybe I’ll get a pricier one when my current favourite Gen D wears out.

I totally agree with you Nick. Generations are extremely good whistles (when you get a good one). Many handmade whistles don’t exactly sound hundreds of dollars “better” than a nice Generation D either (in my opinion).

Hi everyone,my newest brass D gen with the red fipple would indicate a possible upgrade in quality control..lovely tone, check 'em out folks.:smile:Mike

I was just thinking about ordering a nickel Gen or two, too.

I love my Generation D! It’s a green fipple, old tube brass one! Sounds so sweet after tweeking!

I picked up a Gen C and a Gen F whistle, oh, a couple of years ago and I had a hard time getting a good sound out of the F. I couldn’t get a clear second octave.

I’ve been playing the flute a lot for a while now and I guess it’s done me some good, because I picked up my little F whistle today and got a clear two octaves and a pretty nice sound.

I like my generations and wouldn’t mind picking up a D sometime.
