I recently purchased a Gemeinhardt SP2. Its a no frills silver plated student flute. Seems great and the price was too.
Had I the resources and a willingness to spend them on a silver flute, I would have rather had a Yamaha (based solely on their reputation). But, I’m a beginner. After a year or two, I’ll have a better idea of what matters to me in a flute, I’ll be more willing to dip into the kids’ college fund for a more serious instrument. Then I’ll pass this SP2 off to my violin toting 10 yr. old.
Get one in good shape that’s all tuned up and treat it nice. Either of the brands you mentioned would be fine.
The Geme has a large bore and takes a strong embouchure. It is better suited to a man with larger hands. The key stroke is also stiffer and it take too much work for me to play one. Yamaha makes a far superior instrument all around but you pay for the difference. A silver head as in the 300 models will make a lot of difference in tone once you play well enough but the 200 student models are good flutes. If you are a beginner you will not need a silver flute head for some time. I have palyed many flutes since I started in 1956. Until you get to the 4 grand range Yamaha is the cream of the crop.
