sweet!

is that pic the Rudall & Rose number 4929?

I notice that serial numbers 4973 and 4974 are in Terry McGee’s spreadsheet (any pics of those Terry?)

I’m no expert but that head looks like a stranger to the rest of the flute.

yes, that’s what I was wondering. Any opinions?

Other than Catherine McEvoy’s early Rudall & Rose, which has no tuning slide, I have never seen a R&R indexed that did not have either a regular slide or Patent Head. I think the serial # puts the year more around 1844-1845, not 1830, especially since the #1 Tavistock address was from 1839-1848.

Also, not easy to miss the crack in this head, and the inset new embouchure hole.

BTW, lousy photos, little zoom or detail, and if the auction is the 25th, where are photos for the rest of the catalog. I think Gardiner Houlgate also have a minimum of 60 GBP to pack small items, not counting shipping. Bonham’s seems to run a better shop.

McEvoy’s flute is straight not bulging too and the ring on the bulgy bit doesn’t seem to match the other ones. There’s another R&R but no pic. All from deceased gentlemen… several deceased gentlemen flute fanciers… someone is targeting flute collectors. :astonished:

That R&R is a frankenflute for sure - the body looks good though - would be worth acquiring ( at a sensible price) and getting a suitable head for it.

I know this flute, it certainly is a franenkflute, not only is the head from some other crappy flute, but the main tenon is badly damaged, so the body isn’t in great shape either.
Hammy

a sensible price, jem?
now that the whole is out there…hardly seems likely to find sensible right now.

Gardiner occassionally has some decent flutes, but most are in a state requiring a good bit of work.

Fair comment!

I’m not sure exactly which items in this auction may be involved, but I believe (am not sure, though) that one of the collections of wind and ethno instruments belonged to a late denizen of Wrexham and I have seen some of the material displayed in the local museum some years ago. I knew of the gentleman and kept meaning to try to contact and visit him before his death, but never managed to get around to it/sort it out. I also vaguely know two of his sons. I know there had been hopes of preserving the collection intact, but it now seems (I had heard this was now likely) that has not been possible, sadly.

Anyone going along? I’m going “just to watch”…or maybe score me a geezer flute…following a modest win on the nags yesterday, bid against me if you dare!!

Interesting prices today
The Rudall #7103 that I thought would go for good money got just 1850 GBP. I suspected it would get 2500. It’s a gem and the “sister” to it sits at the Metropolitan Museum in NYC (#7106)

The other lot just before it, another Rudall, got 1050 as I recall?

There was another, later in the sale, that seemed not to have any interest, but visually it’s a striking flute. Large milled rings. #4301 as I recall my notes.

Just a heads up that this flute is not in my opinion genuine, I bought it many years ago on e.bay and showed it to Chris Wilkes
who was sure it wasn’t right, I recovered my money from the seller by doorstepping them. Later Andrew Kirby said he had seen
it in Hobgoblin in Manchester a few years before, but at that time it had no stamp or number. Later I was told by another unfortunate who
later purchased it from the same seller that Robert Bigio had seen it and was I heard of the same opinion.
It is horribly out of tune.

I went to this auction (at least the lot viewing) and saw the aforementioned up close and personal.

It’s firewood at best. Out of tune with itself on the notes that would even play.

I saw a really nice little French made Halary (5 keys) in rosewood that was listed to go from £120-180. It had very small finger holes, but was A=440 from what I could tell and played nicely and in tune with itself.

Being too tempted to bid, I left before the auction began.

To be sure, there were some nice flutes there, but a lot were junk as well.

That’s what I call Will power!

the last time that flute appeared, it was listed as seria 3894…
now it is 4301

did anyone get a good enough look at it or was it really trashed?

did anyone got some of the flutes in auction?
the hammered prices are nice…

the wylde went for 1350 gbp
while that R&C for 1800 gbp
the Monzani for 850
a fentum for 520 gbp
and that Lovely T. Prowse for just 550 ??

:really:
