Links to the MIMForum Library have been locked-out for non-members(sorry) . It was/is listed under “woodwinds/Slovakian Fujara” in the MIMForum Library Archives.
The only thing of interest in the discussion there (MIMF) that hasn’t been repeated here, is a post by Gerd Pollitsch that gives measurements for building one of these interesting whistle flutes. I will repeat them below…
Fujara of Fruitwood:
Overall Length of aircolumn from plug face to bore end:
1705mm.
Outside Diameter:
(max;top) 49mm, (min;bottom) 42mm.
Inside Diameter:
(max;top) 30mm, (min;bottom) 29mm.
Embouchure window, quadratic:
11mm X 11mm.
Labium ramp length:
26mm (thickness; 9.5mm)
3 toneholes (in front) of 12mm diameter:
#1) 520mm from bore end.
#2) 395mm from bore end.
#3) 275mm from bore end.
As you can see from the (ave.)diameter and length measurements, this instrument’s bore/length ratio is near 1/39 and close to my previous statement of 1/40.
(This instrument can be made cylindrical with minor alterations to the Overall Length measurement).

actually most fujaras and other slovak whistles are made from Sambucus nigra, maple or other woods are considered little heavy.

From my research, a good Fujara runs about 500-600 euro plus 100 euro shipping to the US. Current wait time is about a month.
Serpent is going to give-it-a-go and do a prototype in PVC off plans found on the internet.

Just did my first experiment with an alto. Six holes so I don’t have to half-hole - oddly, a Brassy Polly barrel on the end, makes for a chromatic scale, and the harmonics using a BP mouthpiece are somthing else! I can’t seem to get the first fifth harmonic, but the second works fine.
This is a most strange sounding beastie, indeed! I’m going to leave this thread and kick off a WTT on it. I still haven’t figured out how to play anythintg recognizable, but the sounds I’m getting are both promising and haunting.

The Fujara is simply an oversized/sub-contrabass Tabor Pipe. Instruments can be designed by multiplying existing Tabor Pipe measurements. The Playing technique is the same as any other Tabor,Picco or Basque 3 hole Pipe and all the tunes (Morris Dance, etc.) played on them. I like to play some Shakuhachi tunes in the upper registers too.
As I stated in a previous thread, the chromatic scale is achieved by using the “phase shift” between registers 2 through 6 (about a half tone flat between each register) + embouchure bending techniques. Should I post a fingering chart with notes and frequencies?
